Sometimes, the night brings in some sadness that was stashed away during the day.
Maybe it’s something about the dark or the quiet, but somehow our fears come out to play.
Here are a few ways that you can begin to cope with being sad at night.
7 Ways to Cope with Being Sad at Night
1 . Sit with your sadness and honor it
This is a little exercise that I learnt from Kyle Cease on youtube.
We have to learn to honor our emotions and accept them as perfect, instead of hating them. So called “bad” emotions are not bad. They’re just emotions.
They want to be seen and heard. They are just passing through. Tell your sadness that you will be there for it. You will honor it and hold space for it.
2 . Be extra kind to yourself
When you are sad, you need to be extra kind to yourself.
Be loving and caring with the thoughts you tell yourself. Treat yourself and be delicate with yourself.
This will help you to cope with being sad at night.
3 . Do soothing activities
Soothing activities include taking a shower, exfoliating and moisturizing your entire body.
You can also sip on warm tea or cold fresh fruit juice.
Perform a self massage. Knead your shoulder muscles. Rub your hands up and down your arms.

4 . Perform sensory care
Sensory care is when you cater to your needs by yourself using different activities.
Sensory simply means your 5 senses. Touch, sight, smell, sound and taste. This can help to ground you and to cope. You can perform touch sensory care by taking a shower, or using a blanket to wrap yourself up.
Sound sensory care can be through listening to ASMR on youtube. Listen to crackles and pops, or whispers. This is good for anxiety as well.

5 . Distract yourself
Forgetting your sadness for the night can be done in a number of healthy ways.
Watch your favorite movie or tv show. This will distract you and hopefully put you in a better mood.
Listening to music can help to distract you as well. Make sure to stay away from songs that will make you sad at night.
6 . Create a nighttime routine
The brain thrives off routine. It’s important to take advantage of this fact and use it wisely.
Create a nighttime routine and follow it every night without fail. This will train your brain to be ready for sleep at the same time every night.
Routine also helps you to focus on different tasks so you can forget your sadness.

7 . Fall asleep earlier
Staying up late can trigger your nighttime sadness.
Try new activities to help you to fall asleep earlier. This can include taking a shower, having a sleeping tea brew, and staying off social media.
Try to keep away from your phone some hours before you sleep. The fact is that scrolling social media keeps you up. however, I think it’s beneficial to use your phone to listen to a podcast or some ambient music.
These are just a few things you can try to help you cope with being sad at night. Experiment and find out what helps you to cope. It could even be just trying out new things that helps you to cope!
