Students always want to know how to improve memory for studying. I have some good news for you. I have created a list of some memory boosting tips for studying that you might have never heard of before.
Of course, I had to start the list with some stuff you have to get out of the way before you try memorizing. Like eating memory boosting foods and getting enough sleep!
But after those important factors, I begin to tell you the juicy memory boosting techniques for studying.
10 Ways to Improve your Memory for Studying
This is a list of 10 ways to improve your memory for studying. It contains memory boosting tips for studying:
1 . Eat right
Eating badly will make you feel bad.
From now on, make a list of foods that make you feel bad and stop eating them. If you are lactose intolerant, stop consuming milk products.
Your body is always telling you how it feels. This affects your studying and memory skills.
2 . Sleep well
Personally, I need at least 10 hours of sleep to function well the next day.
If I stay up and sleep at 12am, my entire day is ruined. I’ll have no energy and my routine is destroyed.
That is why you need to understand your body more. Keep track of how long you sleep and how it affects you.
3 . Repetition
One of the best and most widely used memory techniques is repetition.
Repetition doesn’t require a lot of thinking. It doesn’t require you to understand what you are studying.
All you need to do is repeat some points over and over again until you can say them without looking at your books.
Keep testing yourself to see if you remember what you memorized.
4 . Mind maps
Mind maps is a memory technique that I like to use. It involves drawing circles and using arrows to branch out the different points you need to memorize.
For example, if I am studying about the importance of using networks in computer systems, I will draw a circle in the middle and mark it as “NETWORKS”. After that, create arrows to branch out from the networks circle. Every importance of network point will be in its own little circle.
The reason why mind maps work is because the brain makes connections using a similar technique called “synapses.”
5 . Mind connections
This is another memory technique that doesn’t require you to really understand your concepts. It’s more of a rote repetition memory trick.
Find a way to connect every point to the next one when you are memorizing a bunch of points.
For example, I want to remember the importance of networks in a computer system. They are:
- For better communication
- To share resources
- To share files easily
I’m going to connect the two points together. Communication is the same as sharing ideas and stuff. So, I’ll draw an arrow connecting the words communication and sharing together.
Next I’ll ask myself: what is the connection between the words “resources” and “files”? in my head, I’ll think: Resources are stuff that are really important. What if there was a really important file that was labelled RESOURCES in huge letters? That lets me connect the two points together in my head.
All you have to do is come up with things that make sense to you. Just you and no one else.
Here is an image of what I mean by this memory technique:
6 . Funny jokes
Use funny jokes to help you remember points while studying.
You can come up with funny and stupid personal jokes to help you remember hard things.
That’s one way to improve your memory for studying.
7 . Reviewing
Reviewing means that every time you memorize some points, you must go back and test yourself to see if you still remember.
Reviewing must be done every time you memorize something new. It must be done every day. It must be done as many times as you can handle.
8. Study from different sources
This is also one of my favorite ways to improve your memory for studying.
I try to find different notes online, or textbooks that have similar information.
I find that if I use different sources to learn, it creates more connections in my brain and makes it easier to remember stuff.
9 . Flash cards
I’ll always talk about how flash cards helped me remember important stuff for my history exam.
At the time, I was so tired and fried from having to memorize so much. I physically could not go on.
That’s when I decided to start creating flashcards that I could shuffle and read for every point I needed to memorize.
The good news is that you don’t really need to create your own flash cards. You can find an app in the app store to create flash cards on your phone. It works very efficiently.
10 . Online studying websites
There are so many ways to learn online and this improves your memory. You don’t always have to study from your school notes all the time.
You might be a visual learner whose memory improves by watching YouTube videos.
Or you can try out QUIZLET for flashcards. (You might find an entire test on quizlet!)
Also try out DUOLINGO for languages.
Study away, study bugs!
It’s time to put into y practice a few of these memory boosting tips. I highly recommend trying out my very own mind connection tip.
I hope you will be able to benefit from this post on how to improve your memory for studying.
