When you feel overwhelmed, you need to look at how your mental health is doing. It’s actually during such trying times when you need to be paying more attention to self care. Here’s my own list of self care tips for when you feel overwhelmed.
I’ve been feeling all sorts of feelings this past week. Talk about feeling tired, overwhelmed, uninspired, dull and out of connection with reality. Now that I’m coming to an end in my degree for college, things are getting pretty tense. I’m working on my thesis and I keep having to run around looking for people to help me. At the end of the day, I just feel leeched of life and want to curl up and sleep for a month.
It’s times like these where my mental health is really tested. I have to interact and deal with uncooperative people. It always gets me feeling frazzled. I can’t let my mental health deteriorate during times like this. So, I’ve compiled a list of self care tips for when you feel overwhelmed.
Self Care Tips for When You Feel Overwhelmed
These tips are a reminder for when life is getting too much. Let’s jump into the list of self care tips for when you feel overwhelmed:
1 | Tidy up your space
This is pretty much my body’s natural response to school-related stress. I always thought it was weird that I would start deep-clearing and re-organizing my desk right before I started studying. I thought I was procrastinating! Now I know that organizing my environment also gives me some headspace to reflect on my inner mental environment. Your physical space is a reflection of the inner state of your mind.
2 | Do a brain dump
Another one of my fave self care tips for when you feel overwhelmed is to do a brain dump. Feelings need to be dealt with. If you don’t have good coping skills, your body will automatically find solace in other activities which may be harmful to you. Doing a brain dump can be very good for dealing with your errant emotions. You can do a brain dump by journaling. Write down your feelings in your journal, or write them on a piece of paper if they are too painful to keep. You can burn the paper to signify letting go. Be careful with that, though!
3 | Reconnect with your inner self
Getting distracted with our busy lives means drifting from our inner balance. Reconnect with yourself by meditating. Light up a candle or an incense stick and meditate while being mindful of your thoughts and breathing. You can also reconnect by making yourself a cup of herbal tea (chamomile or peppermint for me!) and sit with it by a window and reflect. Hold conversations with yourself and notice where your thoughts go.
4 | Pamper your body
This should have probably been on the top of the list! That’s because taking time to pamper your body has become unanimous with self care. There’s some truth to that. Show your body love and care through face masks, moisturizing, toning and other skin care routines. It shows that you have time to care for your body and treat yourself right. It cultivates self respect.
5 | Get out in the sun
There’s something about being in the sun that brings me to life. A few minutes of lovely golden sun is great for removing you from a mental funk. Turn your face to the sun, or go out on a walk and let the sun warm up your skin.
6 | Exercise some!
Working out is one of the best self care tips for when you feel overwhelmed. Feeling overwhelmed means that you have a lot of energy inside your mind. You can convert this to physical energy for working out. It will help you to blow off some steam. This is great for intense emotions like anger, spite and resentment. Gym it out, girl!
7 | Eat fruits
Fruits are a great example of high vibration foods. They lift up your mood and give you that fruity goodness. Talk about all those vitamins! Whenever I feel overwhelmed, fruits are my best go-to food to feel rejuvenated and refreshed. You can have smoothies or fresh fruit juices to boost you out of your funk.
8 | Unwind
Feeling overwhelmed is usually a side effect of working hard without any breaks. Take some time to unwind and relax. Do your favorite relaxing hobby, listen to some chill music, or catch up on your TV shows. You need breaks, especially when you’re husting hard! Too much work can burn you out. Be sure to take some much-deserved rest.
Self Care Should Be a Priority
A lot of productive people put their self care in the back seat while they catch up on their goals. That’s never healthy. It means you’re curating stale negative energy as the days go by, and this can lead to mental breakdowns, foul moods and just generally feeling like crap.
