You want to get better grades at school. How do you do it? Well, there are things you know you should be doing. Things such as, actually studying.
But how about the habits you need to break to get better grades? Maybe you need to think about curbing bad habits so that you can start to see some improvement in your grades.
This post will be about the habits you should break to get better grades.
10 Habits to Break to Get Better Grades
1 . Waking up late
I’m not asking you to wake up at 3am every day. Just, maybe you shouldn’t be sleeping in until 1pm! Waking up late is a recipe for laziness. Start waking up at a decent time so you can feel fresh and have more time to do healthier habits. Waking up late is a habit to break to get better grades.
2 . Eating junk
Reduce your intake of junk food. Studying is directly related to the food you eat. I always like to talk about how I get hungry every time I study intensely. The brain needs food. And the brain needs brain food. Stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables, including nuts. Junk food is not doing you any favors. Eating junk is a habit to break to get better grades.
3 . Being stationary
I hate to break it to you, but you need to get off your butt once in a while and get your blood warm and flowing. Do some exercise. Get some physical activity. It is very crucial for physical health, but also does wonders for your mental health. Try getting some action in and then study. You might enjoy the results!
4 . Too much phone usage
Our phones are a huge part of our lives these days, for sure. But maybe they don’t have to be? Sometimes I realize that I’m playing a game on my phone, or scrolling through memes while writing an essay. That’s not all. There’s a song playing in the background, and maybe Reddit is open so I’m reading through r/askreddit. Phone usage while studying is a habit to break to get better grades.
The next points are about things you should stop doing to get better grades.
5 . Not reviewing notes
Reviewing notes is super important! I can’t believe people don’t do this more. Reviewing is what you do after studying intensely. Say you study at 2pm and you use all the study methods to understand and learn some concepts.
Reviewing will be perfect at 7pm before bed. You lightly read through the concepts you studied, and try to remember things from scratch. Reviewing helps to create stronger connections in your brain so you remember things clearly and faster.
6 . Not re-writing notes
When studying, it is crucial that you always re-write your notes. Sometimes we are given notes on our computers. Or maybe we write them down in class. However, part of studying is writing notes again so that you can create more connections in your brain.
Re-writing notes can also be used as a study method.
7 . Not asking for help
Everyone comes across things they don’t understand in class. But how many people actually ask the teacher to repeat things, or ask more questions to help them better understand concepts? Very few. That’s why it isn’t everyone getting awesome grades.
Next time you don’t understand something, ask the teacher during class, or at a different time. You can also ask other students to teach you stuff you don’t get. Not asking for help is a habit to break to get better grades.
8 . Not learning from different sources
You need to learn from different sources. This can really help your brain to make connections so you can remember things faster. I know this from experience. Don’t just study the notes your teacher gave you. Go on youtube and study the same things. Get textbooks. Go on quizlet. Find notes online. all this can increase your chances of getting better grades. Furthermore, it also helps you to feel more confident that you can remember things. Because every source packages information differently. And the brain likes variety.
9 . Not studying every single thing
Do you know those people that pick and choose what topics to study, and leave the rest of the syllabus? Don’t be like that. Commit to studying every single topic that was taught to you in your syllabus. Not studying everything is a bad habit to break to get better grades.
10 . Not taking appropriate breaks
Breaks are a core part of doing any sort of work, and that includes studying. Make study breaks a must in your routine. Set a timer for every 15 minutes and stand up to stretch. Soon it will become automatic to take breaks whenever you sit down to study.
Studying too much with no breaks means that the next day, you won’t be able to be productive!
