This is a post on how to study when you don’t have the motivation you need.
Here’s the thing: Don’t wait around for motivation to strike in order to start studying. That state of being 100% excited to study? It’s a rare and mythical creature. Most of the time, studying is done with no motivation in sight.
Umm, so why am I writing a post on how to study when you don’t have motivation? I have amassed a few tips and tricks designed to get your brain to focus despite not having any “drive” or “passion.”
Believe it or not, the power of the mind is a powerful tool. You can motivate yourself to study just by changing your perception of things. However, today I am not going to be talking about that.
I’m here to give you some “brute force” methods to get you to study even when you don’t have motivation.
Without any further ado, here are some tips for you to study when you don’t have motivation.
5 Methods to Study Even When You Don’t Have Motivation
Make the intention
When you don’t want to study, it’s your brain that doesn’t want to study. Now, what you have to do is send a message to the brain that you do, in fact want to study. Do this by setting an intention that you want to study, and specify how long and what topics you want to study.
This is the first step: Tel your brain you want to study even though you don’t have motivation.
Make things fun
My second tip for studying when you are not motivated is to make things fun. Shake things up a bit. Here is a post on How to Have Fun while you Study
How can you make studying fun? By doing the following:
- Use colorful pens
- Have snacks
- Have music playing in the background
- Sing out your notes
- Use quizlet
Create a strict schedule to follow
Yeah, I know you didn’t like reading the word “strict” up there. But I have to give you facts: Studying at the same time every day is a very efficient way to make sure that you actually study. This tip is extremely effective, and I encourage you to give it a try. Set a specific time and study at that exact time every single day. After a few days, your brain won’t have to fight you anymore. No more procrastination. From now on, it will be a habit to study at that time.
Use different study methods
In order to shake things up, use different study methods than the ones that you use.
Question: Do you even have a study method? Have you heard of PQRST or REAP methods of studying? if you have never researched study methods, you have got to start right now. What do you mean you don’t have a study method? GO and find you one right now.
Here are some posts I wrote to help with finding a study method for you:

Use Pomodoro Technique
Pomodoro technique is something that so many students swear by. It is a productivity method where you divide your productivity into chunks of time. You can measure this time using a phone timer or a pomodoro clock. This clock allows you to set a time limit for how long you will study for. Make the time very short, for example 5 minutes. That means you will have a burst in productivity, nonstop for 5 minutes. Believe or not, this is a very effective tool for productivity.
