Here are some examples of self care that I practice solely for my mental health:

- Painting
- Writing
- Reading poems
It took a while to figure out what works for me.
I love to sing along to my favorite songs. It puts me in a good mood.

I have an old shoe box that I use for my self care box.
You can save some old boxes that you need to throw away. Recycle 🙂

A self care box might as well be a shopping bag stuffed at the bottom of your closet.

How do people cope? Some people use bad habits to fill their emotional holes in their heart.
These turn into addictions. But remember that addictions stem from unresolved trauma.
This is why a self care box is important.
It prevents you from starting bad habits.
Trust me. I have had to beat back some bad habits because I didn’t have good coping skills.
A self care box will ensure that you deal with your emotions in a health way.

In order to create a self care box, you need to ask yourself a few questions.

- What boosts my mood no matter what?
- What leaves me feeling so good?

How to Create a Self Care Box for Mental Health Care
Here are 10 things to add into your self care box:
1 . Journal
In my old shoe box, I keep a journal.
It is not a regular journal. It is only for emergencies and bad mental health days.
I make sure to use it as a part of my self care.
2 . Love letter
I wrote a love letter to myself.
I decorated it with shiny gel pens. I love to read it whenever I feel down.
Sometimes it tears me up. I told myself, “You are the greatest gift the universe has given me”.
You can also write down some important text messages your loved ones have sent you.
When you write it down on paper, it feels special.
3 . Gratitude Letter
Gratitude can improve a bad day.
Yesterday I felt a bit unworthy.
But I reminded myself that I have hands and legs and my body is perfect and capable and strong.
Remember to tell yourself that you are grateful for everything in your life.
4 . Shells
It doesn’t have to be shells.
Add in anything you collected for yourself while you went out or travelled.
I have a regular rock that I picked up when I went on a school trip a long time ago. I like it.
It has a special place in my self care box.
5 . Kiss on a napkin
What better way to show yourself some love than by kissing on a napkin and leaving a lipstick stain?
This is a favorite self care item for my box. Be sure to add it in.
I know it sounds silly but try it out.
6 . Dried flowers
Flowers inspire joy in us.
Next time you find a beautiful flower, you hang it upside down to dry and it will last forever.
You can also place them in a book and close it up for a few days.
They can also be used as bookmarks.
Make a habit of collecting flowers for yourself.
7 . Candles
I save some tea candles for my special self care box.
I also like to save special tea packets if I have any.
Candles set the mood and always feel like self care.
8 . Sticker packs
I have millions of stickers but I save the special ones for my self care box.
Stickers inspire joy in me.
9 . Special Self care pen
Buy an awesome and super special pen for your self care box.
Use it in your journal.
Keeping things special is a good way to feel good.
10 . Painting
Paint yourself something.
It can be a portrait of yourself. Or a beautiful flower. Keep it in your self care box.
